Ever since September of 2009, Julian has been meeting with the kids above every week. They have been involved with a program called Destination ImagiNation. Here is a description from the official Destination ImagiNation website:
Destination ImagiNation, Inc. is an extraordinary non-profit organization that provides educational programs for students to learn and experience creativity, teamwork and problem solving. Every year, we reach 100,000 students across the U.S. and in more than 30 countries. Destination ImagiNation, our core program, is an exhilarating after-school activity in which students work in teams to solve mind-bending Challenges and present their solutions at Tournaments. Teams are tested to think on their feet, work together, and devise original solutions that satisfy the requirements of the Challenges. Participants gain more than just basic knowledge and skills – they learn to unleash their imaginations and take unique approaches to problem solving.
Julian’s team was composed of five other kids that are also homeschooled within Durham or Chapel Hill.
We traveled to Elizabeth City, North Carolina for our team to present their challenges at this eastern NC tournament. We stayed in a hotel Friday night. This was a Morrison first, our family of six had not stayed in a hotel together before. You’ll get a kick out of this . . . there were only two beds in our room. 🙂 Are you giggling yet? Yes, there were three in each bed. Talk about family bonding. We enjoyed dinner out with the team and all the families that came to support them. We also were able to enjoy a little pool time Friday evening. The kids all loved that. It was a really sweet experience for our families.
Saturday was full of performances. There were several teams from NC represented. Our kids had to perform a skit that they had prepared themselves and perform an instant challenge. It was neat to experience the whole getting nervous for your kid thing. Julian had never really performed anything in front of an audience. The whole team of kids were totally fine with their nerves. The parents on the other hand were quite nervous. Our team from Durham/Chapel Hill did such an amazing job. We were all so proud. Julian’s DI team came in first place within their specific division! Isn’t that awesome? Here are a few pictures from our weekend.
This was dress rehearsal night. To the right is our friend, Kim. She and Tonya led our group this entire school year.
Here’s Julian on dress rehearsal night in his alien costume.
Julian, Madelyn, Brayden and Kalen just before heading to the hotel pool.
For the skit, Julian had his hair sprayed green. Alien’s hair should be green, right?
Needless to say, we were quite tired on our ride home. Here is Brady passed out on his teddy bear, Scrubby.
